Burning Sands Review

As we are in the midst of probate season across the country, a hot new Netflix movie “Burning Sands” has become one of the most popular movies out there, especially for the young adult age range.

The movie is based on the initiation process into college Greek organizations. Gerald McMurray is the film director and writer, and the movie is about the underground process into Black Greek organizations. McMurray is a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He is a member of organizations within the National Pan Hellenic Council (NPHC). He said, “I come from this world of going to a HBCU and being in a Black fraternity and I just wanted to explore that subculture”. His main object was the highlight the secrets of what every black fraternity endures.

Alexsis Shorter, a junior business management major from Utica, Miss said, “That movie was crazy. The film is rated r, and shows very explicit content. They are many scenes that show bodily harm, mental, and physical harm to the prospects by the already members of the organization. A man even experience a seizure died towards the end of the film.

With McMurray being a member of a Divine 9 organization, it has people everywhere talking and speculating on what actually happens within Greek organizations, rather than what is advertised.

Jackson State University is one of the schools that own a chapter with every Divine 9 organizations, but not only that, they also have dozens of different organizations within the past 10 years that has been involved in hazing incidents and allegations. The Delta Sigma Theta sorority has been suspended from Jackson State’s campus since 2010 for a hazing incident, also has other non-Greek organizations such as Cheer Phi Cheer, which is the cheer leading squad, and the War & Thunder drumline.

Hazing has become a big issue in the United States, as most recently Robert Champion, a student at Florida A&M University was murdered during a drum major initiation ritual. In 2011, Roger McDowell, a band member reported hazing within the band and got nearly 20 students sent to student affairs and suspended from school for the rest of that year and the next. Hazing is not simple task to get rid of because most incoming students are breaded from older siblings, relatives, or friends who they know that already went through a hazing process. Hazing is not only in college, but it’s also in the jails, military, and in different job industries.

Antonio Knott, a senior mass communications major from Jackson, Miss said, “Man that movie is very interesting because it sheds light on many things that go on that some people have zero clue about.” Rheana Allen, a sophomore meteorology major from Memphis, Tenn said, “Wow, that movie scary, I think they probably over exaggerated in the hazing. It’s very rare that a person actually dies or gets physically harmed that bad.”

It’s a Netflix sensation and Gerald McMurray has definitely wrote an eye-opening, and popular movie.

Gap from 6-8 In The Eastern Conference Tightens

There’s a 99.9% chance that whichever team ends up as the #8 seed in the east is going home in the first round. Most likely in a sweep. They’ll have a date with the LeBron led and defending NBA champs Cleveland Cavaliers.

James has never lost a first round series in each of his 11 appearances. In fact he hasn’t lost a single first round game since 2012. He has the single most consecutive first round series wins in NBA history, winning 44 out of 51 first round playoff games. His dominance in the east is never over-looked, regardless of the lack of competitive balance compared to the Western Conference.

At this point, Mar. 6 2017 the 6th and 11th seed are separated by 5 games. The Pacers(32-30), Bulls(31-31), Pistons(30-32), Heat(29-34), Bucks(28-33), and Hornets(27-35) are all fighting for position. All teams who have been in the playoffs within the past few seasons and are looking to gain consistency. Which will be the more compelling first round series? Let’s see.

This past summer the Miami Heat lost the greatest Heat player in franchise history, and 13 veteran Dwayne Wade. A player who helped deliver the city 3 world championships. They lost him to free agency once he decided to join the Chicago Bulls, which he is a native of the city. Chris Bosh is most likely finished as an NBA player due to blood clots he suffered the past 2 years. A team that had won 2 straight championships with 4 straight finals appearances had looked like they were going into rebuild mode, and it started with Pat Riley turning center Hassan Whiteside into the franchise player.

Through the first 41 games of the season the Heat went 11-3o and looked like one of the worst teams in the league. After that 116-108 at Milwaukee the Heat went on a 13 game winning streak in which 4 Heat players scored at least 30 points in a game. Now two months has passed and their record is 29-34 and they are a game and a half out of the number 8th seed. The Heat have 8 players averaging double digits in scoring which is leading the NBA BY FAR! Goran Dragic is averaging 20.2 points, and assists, Whiteside is averaging 16.7 points and 14.1 rebounds, Dion Waiters is averaging 15.4 points with 4.3 steals, that team has no true no office player but it’s evident how they are winning. They are stacked with mid-leveled young players who just needed the opportunity. They aren’t just beating bad teams, they have some impressive wins, one coming against the Golden State Warriors. The Heat would give the Cavaliers all they could handle if that were a first round matchup.

The jury is out on Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo as a franchise player. He’s averaging 23.2 points,, 8.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists, along with 1.9 blocked shots, on 52.9% shooting, but the Bucks are underachieving as always. Is he capable of being the best player on a championship team? The roster has talent with guys like Jabari Parker, Greg Monroe, Michael Beasley, and Matthew Dellevedova, so the roster can’t possibly be the issue. Right now they are #10 in the east and also are 1.5 games out of the 8th spot.

The Detroit Pistons wee supposed to take that next step. Currently they are #8 in the east, but it is a standstill compared to where they were a season ago. A team that features all-star big man Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tobias Harris, and coached by Stan Van Gundy, the Pistons pushed LeBron and the Cavs during the playoffs a season ago. Now they were expected to make the leap like Boston did into one of the higher seeds. A season ago the Pistons starting 5 led all NBA starting 5’s in total points for the season. This season have been full of drama surrounding point guard Reggie Jackson. They team tried to move him before the deadline, but they failed to see eye to eye. He is up to make 18 million dollars next season. A player that received a 5 year 80 million dollar contract he’s has not lived up to it. He will probably be moved this summer. They team has not been happy with his shoot-first mentality, and on the court the team with both Jackson and Drummond on the floor has been nearly as bad at the Brooklyn Nets.

The Pacers are 32-30, and are probably going to make the playoffs, but the question is whether Paul George is a true superstar to build around or not. The Pacers were willing to deal George before the deadline. Top suiters were the Lakers, and Celtics. 3 years if you asked Larry Bird and the front office if they were willing to trade Paul George, you probably would’ve heard a heck no, no way in a million years. There was a point that Paul George was in arguments with LeBron has the best small forward in the NBA. George led a Pacers team the 2 straight conference finals against LeBron before going down with a broken leg in the summer of 2014 at a team USA scrimmage. Every since then he has not been the same.

JSU Baseball Wins Season Series vs Alcorn 3-1

To extend the winning streak to two games in a row, the Jackson State University baseball team defeated rival Alcorn 11-6 at the Bob Braddy Field. This victory also ends the season series as Jackson State wins it 2-1.

The most successful sports team at JSU while under the direction of head coach Omar Johnson since 2007, the tigers have ranked number one on six separate seasons and number two four times, making the playoffs twice. Their highest win percentage came in 2012 as they went 34-17.

This season has been a rollercoaster thus far. After opening the season with a victory 10-5 against Morehead State, the tigers would go on to lose three straight, win three straight, and then win four out their next five games. Their record is currently at 13-9.

Their next two games will be home games against Le Moyne Owen and Tougaloo, and after that they will travel to Fort Meyers, FL. as they will battle against Florida Gulf Coast three straight days. The tigers won’t return home until Wed, Apr 7.

The roster features seven freshmen, three sophomores 12 juniors, and 10 seniors. A roster that is 36 deep, filled with length and size at every position.

Cornelius Copeland, the star senior out of St. Petersburg, FL is fresh off a career year in 2016. He was one of the best hitters in the nation. During the 2015-2016 season he ranked 42nd in slugging percentage, 3rd in the nation in batting average, 9th in runs per game, 2nd in hit by pitch per game, 21st in runs, 1st in hit by pitch, 3rd in on base percentage, and 56th in hits per game.

Bryce Brown, a junior out of Walker, LA entered his 3rd season as a member of the baseball team. During the 2015-2016 season he ranked 50th in runs per game, 32nd in hit by pitch per game, 24th in hit by pitch, 22nd in on base percentage, and 20th in hit by pitch per game.

Another star player Jesus Santana, a junior out of Caguas, Puerto Rico ranked 28th in home runs per game, 24th in runs batted in per game, 18th in home runs, 30thth in runs, and 13th in runs batted in.

Paris Cooper, the teams’ equipment manager commented on the victory against Alcorn. She said, “we earned it”. Darian Kinsey, a graduating senior at JSU and long time supporter of the team said, “the baseball team has always been very good, they’re the best sports team on campus”. Markus Green, a senior at JSU said, “we’ll continue to support the team, they’ll figure it out”.

Both Major and Minor Baseball League scouts are at almost every game, so therefore this long grinded out season and the few tigers making top rankings in the nation aren’t all worthless. The tigers are gaining more exposure.

The team is locked and loaded at every position and will look to make ground as 16 more games will be on the road and 11 at home.

What Will Be Magic Johnson’s First Order Of Duty?

The most storied franchise in NBA history Los Angeles Lakers will finish the season lottery bound and a void of a playoff appearance for the 4th consecutive season.

16 world championships hang in the rafters in the Staples Center, 2nd most to the Boston Celtics. At least four of the top 15 greatest players of all-time all wore purple and gold and won championships. Legends from Wilt Chamberlin, Shaquille O’Neal, Kareem, Kobe Bryant, to Pau Gasol, all are apart of Lakers history.

This is the worst era in Lakers history as each of the past two seasons the Lakers have set records for losses in a season with 17-65 and 21-61. The Lakers have had a history of quickly bouncing back into title contention, but this process might take a bit longer.

After a 20 year career and five championships with the Lakers perhaps the greatest Laker of all-time Kobe Bryant has retired and now the franchise is in search of its’ next guy.

Deangelo Russell, a second year point guard out of Ohio State has had his moments but does not look like he’ll be in a Lakers uniform as part of the future. He’s been relatively average for a number two overall draft pick and has been involved in off court lockeroom drama with teammates.

Brandon Igram, the rookie guard/forward has shown progress but is near bust contention. He’s averaging 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game but the Lakers expected far more. Maybe you can blame the front office for signing Luol Deng and keeping Nick Young.

Magic Johnson is the President of Basketball Operations and knows that his job won’t be easy. The entire roster has reshaping up to do. Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson are still there and productive so only time will time.

This upcoming draft is deep with talent, so as every year. Lonzo Ball, Jayson Tatum, Josh Jackson, Markelle Fultz, and Dennis Smith Jr. are the top prospects.

The Lakers best chance to gamble on the right guy is to lose for the rest of the season.

Trust The Process

As I continue on my college journey towards becoming one of the top young media personalities and journalists in the country the road never stops.

Do I want to only be elite in college or do I want to continue to break barriers? Of course I want to break barriers.

I’m strategizing to find different ways to promote my content and to network with as many professionals in the journalism world, mainly ESPN as I can. It all starts with the content. Can I do the work? Can I be appealing to a mass number of audiences? Can I keep people tuned into my messages?

Some of the very talented individuals never exceed their limitations because they never networked. The phrase “it’s about who you know, not what you know” is very true and undefeated.

It’s time to start traveling with faith that I’ll reach my destinations in piece and that when crunch time arrives God will cover me and allow me to grind. It is time for me to branch outside of the region I am in and start taking risks of meeting people across the country. Every great and successful individual has taken risks.

I don’t have many resources nor do I have family in any major market economy, but at a point very soon I hope to be relocated myself to a top 5 market in the country. It’ll be very tough. Probably the most difficult time period of my life, but it’s worth the gamble because I am serious about success.

My journey to ESPN and my own major platform won’t be over until I can relax and reflect on a long career, view my family’s comfortbility, and sleep in peace knowing that I revolutionized an entire industry.

Which NBA Point Guard Has The Most Pressure Heading Into The Playoffs?

Boston Celtics’ star point guard is currently top 3 in scoring and has his team number 2 in the east, with a chance to eclipse the Cavaliers for the number 1 seed. But is that enough?

The Boston Celtics have made the playoffs each of the past 2 seasons, all ending in first round exits. The honeymoon period is over. With great defenders and young talent like Avery Bradley, Jae Crowder, Al Horford, and Marcus Smart, there’s no reason as to why the Celtics can’t make a serious championship push.

This is John Wall’s 7th season in the NBA and has only has 2 first round series wins to his resume. The Wizards failed to reach the playoffs in 2016 and now the jury is out on whether him and Bradley Beal are the formula in Washington to win. He said “the only point guards better than me are Curry and Westbrook”. Currently the Wizards are on pace for a playoff berth, but how deep of a run?

This will be Russell Westbrook’s first post-Durant playoff run as the clear cut number 1 option. Westbrook is averaging a triple double and will most likely finish with his 2nd career scoring title.

Will averaging a triple double be enough to off set him advancing in the post season?

It’s a season for the ages. He will become to 2nd player in NBA history to averaging a triple double for a entire season. Most people expect for the Thunder to have an early playoff exit, but its hard to imagine one of the ruthless conpetitors in NBA to go down easily.

Stephen Curry has a championship, probably would’ve been 2 if Draymond Green hadn’t gotten suspended, 2 league MVP awards, and was the best player on a championship team, until Kevin Durant arrived. If the Warriors are short handed in the playoffs the radar will be sharp in Curry to lead his team and be the clear cut best floor on the floor every game, which is not a easy task.

Chris Paul has been in the league since 2005 and has yet to berth a 2nd rouns appearance. He’s not getting any younger and the Clippers’ door as a championship team is closing. CP3 will become a free agent after this season and with the Blake Griffin and Deandre Jordan experiment not being very successful, its a question to ask on whether him and Blake both will remain on the roster.

  • Its the golden age for point guards.
